Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-LaThis Historic Art Deco Los Angeles Landmark Re-Opens October 2008
The historic Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-La opens its doors for business again in October 2008 after a $30 million refurbishment providing ocean-front LA accommodation.
The classic art-deco hotel was built in 1939, but its facilities are being brought right up-to-date after its first major refurbishment in twenty years. All the guest rooms will now be equipped with iPod docks, high-speed internet access, premium sound systems and 50- and 60-inch flat panel televisions by LG and Sony. The new improved Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-La will have 71 guest rooms, and 67 of these will have ocean-front views. They will include one- and two-bedroom apartments, flats, suites and a Penthouse. They will offer 24-hour in-room dining, in-room spa services, hypoallergenic rooms, bath products by Natura Green and robes by Frette. Other facilities at the Shangri-La in Santa Monica will include:
Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-La DiningThe main dining room at the new Shangri-La will overlook the courtyard and swimming pool, and offer both indoor and patio seating. As much of the food as possible will be sourced at the nearby Santa Monica Farmer's Market, and the gourmet restaurant will be open daily for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There will also be a casual sidewalk café. Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-La Rooftop Lounge BarSuite 700 is the Shangri-La's rooftop lounge, which has both indoor and outdoor areas and offers spectacular Pacific Ocean views. There will be countless cocktails on offer, and a special Water Bar for guests who want to rehydrate, with a choice of still and sparkling waters from all over the world. Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-La LocationThe Shangri-La has been overlooking the Pacific Ocean on California's west coast since it was built back in 1939. Its art-deco beauty has proved to be timeless, and in almost 70 years in business it has hosted US presidents, movie stars and artists in its prominent position atop a bluff. It's only a short walk down to the ocean and to Santa Monica's beaches, a 20-minute drive from Los Angeles International Airport, and a short drive from most of LA's major visitor attractions, including Malibu (6 miles), Venice Beach (3.5 miles), the Santa Monica Pier (0.5 miles), Beverly Hills (8 miles) and the exclusive shopping along Rodeo Drive (8 miles). The J. Paul Getty Museum is 9 miles away, and 10 miles gets you to the Los Angeles County Museum of Art, the Museum of Contemporary Art at Los Angeles, and, if you're visiting for the Oscars, it's just 10 miles to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences. In 2009 the grand old Santa Monica Hotel Shangri-La will no doubt be celebrating its 70th birthday in style, but for fall 2008 it will just be glad to be open again.
