Starting today you can book tickets to travel between LA (Los Angeles) and six major cities using the internet for as low as $1 each way.

Megabus (www . megabus . com) is a no frills, non stop bus line that has had success in the Midwest. Next week Megabus launches bus service from its Los Angeles, California hub to four California cities plus Las Vegas, Nevada and Phoenix/Tempe, Arizona.

If you book forty five days in advance, then you might get lucky and get one of their famous one dollar fares plus a fifty cent booking fee. Fares go up as you book closer to the departure date. You could get a five dollar ticket a week before departure if plenty of open seats are available. Like the no frills airlines, Megabus uses the internet to book your tickets, bypassing local travel agents and costly local customer service. If you have questions, you fill out a form on the internet or call them.

Dale Moser, president and chief operating officer of Coach USA, the parent company of Megabus says of their service "this is a great value for the money. There's a market that's cost-conscious and is looking for an alternative."

The top priced one way fare from San Jose to Los Angeles will be $34. This is a $5 savings off Greyhound's lowest rate, advance purchase fare of $39.

The San Francisco Chronicle reports:

  • "As more people look at ways to travel green, we anticipate that people are going to look at the motor coach option more seriously," said Eron Shosteck, vice president of the American Bus Association, a trade group in Washington. A bus departing Los Angeles at 7 a.m. stops in San Jose before reaching San Francisco at 2 p.m. A bus departing Los Angeles at 2:30 p.m. stops in Oakland before getting to San Francisco at 9:30 p.m., and a third bus departs Los Angeles at 11:30 p.m., stops in Oakland and then reaches San Francisco at 6:30 a.m.
