San Francisco hotel rates tend to be higher than most cities, due to its popularity as a vacation destination. There are plenty of rooms to choose from, but if you want the best, it's wise to plan ahead and book as soon as you can. There may be a few last-minute bargains, but it's more likely there'll be a last-minute disappointment and you won't get the hotel or type of room you want.
Here are four of the best luxury hotels in San Francisco, in Downtown, Fisherman's Wharf, and Nob Hill.
222 Sansome Street
If you want to impress a companion, then a room on one of the upper floors of this 48-story landmark hotel gives unbelievable views across the city, over San Francisco Bay and even the Golden Gate Bridge. Amenities include a 24-hour fitness center where you can also have a massage, or have one in the privacy of your room. Yoga classes are available at Equinox Fitness across the street. Dining is at their own Silks restaurant, with regular wine dinners (check dates in advance), or "small plate" dining at the MO Bar.
665 Bush Street
The Orchard describes itself as a green, eco-friendly, and stylish luxury boutique hotel, while TripAdvisor regularly votes it one of the top luxury hotels in the USA. It's two blocks from Union Square and right by the Powell Street cable car line. There are 95 rooms and 9 suites, all with state-of-the-art DVD and CD entertainment centers, large desks with extra lighting for business travelers needing to work, and arty black and white photos of San Francisco on the walls.
600 Stockton Street
With the Ritz-Carlton quality and a location in Nob Hill, San Francisco hotel luxury doesn't come more guaranteed than this. It's the only San Francisco hotel that is both AAA Five-diamond rated and Mobil Five-star rated – and that goes for its dining as well. Its Spa-De-Vie has an indoor pool, whirlpool, massages and all the other usual spa treatments, and there's a fitness center, business center and 24-hour room service.
425 N. Point Street
The Frommer's guide has voted this the best hotel at Fisherman's Wharf eight years in a row, so don't let the Best Western name fool you into thinking it's just a conventional mid-range Best Western. Each evening there's a hosted tasting of wine and Italian beers, and the rooms have DVD players, MP3 hook-ups, cable TV, dataports, free high-speed wireless internet and a free daily paper. The hotel is located right by Fisherman's Wharf, just a short stroll from the ferry to Alcatraz Island.
